Hyper-converged infrastructure: What is it?

In short: Hyper-convergence is all about hardware consolidation and getting the most out of your hardware infrastructure. Clients can expect to achieve less space, less power, reduction in software licensing at a host level and together this leads to cost reduction.

The dominant players today are Nutanix and SimpliVity and Consolidated Computing is certified to deliver and integrate both solutions. The major difference between the two is that Nutanix has created their own software platform to install and manage the infrastructure, while SimpliVity utilizes VMWare’s vCenter.

Nutanix’s secret sauce is in their software while SimpliVity utilizes an accelerator card in a PCI slot to provide data-deduplication at inception and over the WAN. Both offerings deliver excellent levels of input and output within the box.

Both solutions are widely used in both server and desktop virtualization.
